Frequently Asked Questions

Your Safe Haven Experience

• What is a couples’ intensive?
A couples intensive is a focused, extended therapy session designed to help you and your partner dive deeply into the heart of your relationship challenges. Instead of spreading the work out over weeks or months, an intensive gives you concentrated time to heal, reconnect, and build new patterns together. A Safe Haven Intensive helps couples to get unstuck in the negative cycles and patterns they find themselves in.

• Who are intensives for? Safe Haven intensives are a good fit if:

  • You’re feeling stuck in repeating patterns of conflict.
  • Trust has been broken.
  • You want to reconnect and rebuild closeness.
  • Weekly sessions haven’t been enough, or you want to make progress quickly.

• What is the difference between Safe Haven and other couples intensives? The Safe Haven approach is based on Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), one of the most researched and effective models for helping couples achieve lasting change. Over the past 25 years, our team has led hundreds of couples intensive seminars. Our process is intentional, in-depth, and highly personal. Many couples choose our seminars for the individualized attention it provides as we give couples a practical gameplan on how to get unstuck, heal, and reconnect.

• How can we prepare for the seminar? It’s helpful to reflect on the history of your relationship—both the strengths and the struggles. Consider the patterns where you feel stuck, the hurts that need attention, and the goals you’d like to focus on during the intensive. We also recommend taking time before the intensive to “cool off” by pausing arguments as the seminar will be a more productive and safer place to work through conflict.

• What if my partner is unsure about attending? It’s very common for one partner to feel hesitant. Often a spouse fears they will not have the freedom to explore their own hurts and needs but feel pressured to do what is expected. Most couples arrive feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or guarded. Within the first day, relief and safety typically begin to take hold. The goal is not to pressure anyone but to create understanding, calm, and clarity—so both partners can be more grounded and open.  And explore what the healing journey toward a safe haven marriage would entail.

• What can we expect during an intensive? You can expect a safe, supportive environment where you’ll work on communication, repair, and rebuilding your connection. Your therapist will guide you through structured conversations, practical tools, and exercises designed to help you understand each other more deeply and strengthen your bond.

• What support is available after the seminar? At the end of your intensive, you and your counselor will create a follow-up plan to help you maintain and strengthen the changes you’ve begun. If you already work with a therapist, we’re happy to collaborate with them to ensure your ongoing support. We also offer optional follow-up coaching sessions or the Safe Haven 6-Month Aftercare Program.

• How long is the seminar each day? Seminars typically run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. You’ll spend the day working closely with your counselor. We include a lunch break to rest, recharge, and process before resuming in the afternoon. Light snacks are provided, but feel free to bring anything that helps you feel comfortable. Since you’ll be sitting much of the day, we recommend dressing casually.

• Do you offer virtual options?
Yes. While many couples choose to attend in person at our Carlsbad, CA location, we also offer virtual intensives via Zoom. Virtual sessions allow you to receive the same focused support from the comfort of your own home—an especially helpful option for out-of-area clients or those who prefer not to travel.

Where do we stay? If you’re flying in, you’ll arrive at San Diego International Airport and choose a local hotel. Intensives take place in Carlsbad, California. If you live nearby, we encourage you to put normal responsibilities on hold during your intensive so you can focus fully. Many couples spend their evenings resting, reflecting, and preparing for the next day. Virtual attendees can also benefit from setting aside dedicated time and creating a private, quiet space for their sessions.

What dates are available? We typically have availability three weeks each month. Since spots fill quickly, please contact us as soon as possible with your preferred dates.

How do we get started? The first step is to reach out and schedule a consultation. Together, we’ll talk about your goals, answer your questions, and find the right format—whether that’s an in-person intensive here in Carlsbad or a virtual session from the comfort of your home.

Create a more fulfilling and loving relationship.
